What is WiMAX ?
WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a wireless broadband communication technology based on IEEE802.16. With IEEE802.16-2004 (Fixed WiMAX), one antenna can cover around 50 km (30 miles), and the maximum data rate reaches 75 Mbps per base station. WiMAX has been adopted in North America and Asia as a Last Mile solution where DSL or optical broadband services cannot be provided. It is widely regarded as a cost effective solution for wireless broadband service with mid/long distance coverage.
In addition, Mobile WiMAX based on IEEE802.16e is rapidly emerging as the preferred standard for next generation wireless broadband access. Mobile WiMAX is an amended version of IEEE802.16-2004 with mobility features such as handover, and it enables broadband services with a theoretical speed of 120 km/h. Most service providers around the globe have committed to deliver wireless broadband services by taking advantage of Mobile WiMAX enhanced data services. Now many system vendors, operators and service providers are joining the WiMAX field and WiMAX is expected to expand the market into new areas.
